In Belgium, tomatoes grow on one side of the tomato company Rijtak’s greenhouse. And, on the other, in meters-long tubes, microalgae. While Jannes Vertommen was a student, he learned of microalgae’s benefits in agriculture and horticulture.
Four years later, he has developed an entire production in his parents’ greenhouse.
“Microalgae are a good addition to the consumption pattern. They contain plenty of protein, vitamins, and essential fatty acids,” Jannes tells Belgian news outlet RTV. After considerable research, the Vertommen family was convinced there is a future in microalgae. “Microalgae have incredible nutritional value, just like insects,” says Jannes.
