Researchers Among Group to Reflect on Future of Europe

Spanish EU presidency calls for “new narratives” from participants in September talks

Researchers are among a group of leading cultural figures who will reflect on the future of Europe in debates co-hosted next month by the Spanish presidency of the Council of the EU member state governments.

Academics including European colonial historian Olivette Otele and political scientist Blanca Garcés will meet for the events being held on 27-30 September in Spain.

“More than 60 years after its creation, the EU is facing major challenges that call for a look back to its founding values,” the Spanish presidency said.

It added that the aim of the events is “to imagine…new narratives that will convey the diversity and complexity of the current times and open up new horizons for the future of the continent”.

The debates will “explore the lessons of common history, war and fascism, and explore the meanings of the words border and freedom”.

According to a schedule from another co-host, the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona, talks include a presentation from Otele and Garcés on “new and old frontiers” on 29 September.

Other speakers include Nobel Prize in Literature winners Olga Tokarczuk and JM Coetzee (pictured right and left respectively).
