Urmas Paet (Reform Party), Vice Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, said at an extraordinary joint meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Security and Defense Subcommittee of the European Parliament that Ukraine should receive security guarantees as soon as it wins the war.

“We must bear in mind that it may take years for Ukraine to join the EU and NATO,” Paet said. “For now, however, we must ensure that Ukraine receives credible security guarantees.”

“It is very important to mobilize all the necessary political, financial, military and diplomatic resources to ensure that the horrific crimes that we witness every day do not happen again in the future.”

Paet highlighted the Kiev Security Agreement, which includes well-defined security guarantees and a joint strategic partnership.

For all the help the EU and our partners are giving Ukraine, we must also move forward in using Russia’s frozen assets to rebuild Ukraine. “Unfortunately, the European Commission is not moving forward with this initiative as quickly as it should,” added Paet.

The meeting was also addressed by former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak.
