Scholz calls for ‘political settlement’ of Russia-Ukraine war with India’s mediation

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for a “political settlement” to Russia’s war against Ukraine and supported India’s initiative to act as a mediator in this process, German broadcaster Deutsche Welle reported on Oct. 25.

“Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine affects both Germany and India in many ways,” Scholz said at a joint press conference with Indian PM Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

“No one can turn a blind eye to this conflict. Therefore, I am strongly advocating for India to pursue a long-lasting and just peace.”

The chancellor added that he welcomes India’s readiness to “use strong ties with all parties to contribute to a political resolution of the conflict.”

At the same time, he reiterated Berlin’s policy of supporting Ukraine maintaining its territorial integrity.

“This war, which has been raging for so long and taking so many lives, must finally come to an end,” Scholz added.

“Ukraine’s integrity and sovereignty must be preserved. This is what we stand for.”

During a meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin at the recent BRICS summit, Modi offered any possible assistance in “settling” the war Russia wages against Ukraine.

Previously, Politico reported that Ukraine had chosen Modi as its chief mediator for potential negotiations with Russia. An unnamed Ukrainian official confirmed that India holds significant hope for Kyiv in forging a peace deal with Moscow.
