It has emerged that a SAS flight between Malaga and Stockholm had to divert to Brussels due to the smell of smoke in the cockpit. SAS flight SK1804 is a routine scheduled flight between Malaga and Stockholm, with the affected rotation being operated by ES-SAB.
As per data from Planespotters.net, ES-SAB is a 15.1 year old Airbus A320-200 which originally started out life with Aeroflot back in October 2008.
By June 2019, the aircraft was handed over to Interjet, and then following their demise, the aircraft was handed back to lessor GECAS.
In November 2021, the aircraft was bought by AerCap and then sent over to SmartLynx Estonia in May 2022 to then be handed over again to Air Peace in October of that year.
In June 2023, the aircraft was handed over to TUI fly Belgium, and was subsequently returned in October 2023, where SAS have been operating the aircraft since via a leasing arrangement.
SK1804 departed Malaga at 1907 local time on November 5 and proceeded northbound to Stockholm.
Upon reaching the Brussels area, the crew onboard reported the smell of smoke in the cockpit, which prompted a diversion and emergency call to the Belgian capital.
By around 2300 local time, the aircraft was allowed to depart and continue onwards to Stockholm, where it landed safely at 0024 local time, nearly three hours late.
As per Aviation24, a SAS spokesperson said the following on the incident:
“There was a smell of smoke in the cabin. It was an emergency landing. Technicians were on site as soon as the plane landed”.
The aircraft has since been flying and in commercial and operational use.
